There were many doubts when a former working
cowboy, Jack Cox, moved to Gerry, NY and in 1945
suggested a rodeo as a way of raising money for the newly
formed Gerry Volunteer Fire Department. His idea
became a reality, as members of the department
in seventy days turned four acres of swamp into an arena
and parking lot in time for the arrival of Colonel Jim
Eskew and the livestock.
This year the Gerry Volunteer
Fire Department presents the 64th consecutive annual
rodeo in 2008, one of the longest running events in Chautauqua
County, with an arena seating 4000, a lighted parking lot
and a modern midway. All food is prepared daily in
our kitchen and outdoor barbecue pits, served in newly
remodeled dining hall, where you can make friends with
your dining neighbors and comment on our famous locally
prepared barbecue sauce. Thus, through the
volunteer help of nearly everyone in the quiet community,
for one week each year Gerry becomes the rodeo city of
the East. This year is also our Rodeo Producer, Bob
Barnes', 58th year in the rodeo business, giving Gerry
Rodeo 122 years combined rodeo experience.
